Fostering was the best decision I ever made
I have been a foster carer for over 7 years now, fostering had always been something I had wanted to do, when my son was 3 years old I made a call to Aberdeen City Council and asked whether I could be a foster carer as a Single mum? The answer was yes, this wasn’t a problem. After an initial home visit from a social worker, I attended the skills to foster course then my assessment went to panel and I was approved as a respite foster carer. I decided respite was best for me to begin with as it would allow me to slowly introduce fostering to my son, we offered weekend and holiday placements which fitted in well around the term time job I had with the NHS.
3 years later and after chatting with my son who was now 7yrs old I decided to leave my current job and foster full time.
We haven’t looked back; it was the best decision I have made. Over the past 4 years we have welcomed many babies into our home and had the privilege of watching them grow and develop until they have either returned home to their parents or moved to new families. Each child takes a piece of your heart with them, it’s the most heart wrenching job but equally rewarding and definitely the job for me. I really love what I do.
I feel very well supported by the service, I would say to anyone interested in fostering to phone up and find out more information.
